Since 2018, Nuru Nigeria has been demonstrating the value of investing in women through its women-first approach which dictates that a woman in a household must be registered with a Nuru-supported cooperative before a man can. Nuru Nigeria has equipped these registered smallholder farmers to thrive within member-owned cooperatives, increasing their incomes from $13 to $145 and their crop yields by 145%. For every 10 farmers that Nuru Nigeria serves, 10 are women. During the IWD event, cooperative leaders and women farmers were invited to share about Nuru Nigeria’s impact and reflect on the importance of including women in community initiatives.

“Let us take inspiration from the remarkable progress we have made while recognizing the work still ahead.  Despite the progress made in the last 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, millions of women still face barriers to their rights, opportunities, and safety. Let us continue to support policies and programs that ensure gender equity. Let us challenge societal norms that hinder progress. And let us reaffirm our commitment to building a future where every woman and girl has the opportunity to reach her full potential.” – Nuru Nigeria Managing Director Amy Gaman

Nuru Nigeria will continue to champion the inclusion of women in rural livelihoods initiatives in northern Nigeria, knowing the profound impact this has on their families, communities, the nation, and our global community at large.
